5. Robot Selection Considerations

Selecting an industrial robot for a welding workshop is a systematic process that requires evaluating multiple factors. The following are the key considerations.

5.1 Define Application Requirements and Process Needs (The First Step)

Task Type: Different welding processes require different motion trajectories, accuracy, and payload requirements.

Welding Accuracy: Automotive body welding typically requires repeatability of ±0.08 mm or better, while precision electronic assembly may require ±0.03 mm or higher.

Workpiece and Production Capacity: Consider the workpiece size, weight, material, weld location, weld length, and required production cycle time. These factors determine the required reach, payload, and operating speed.

5.2 Evaluate Core Performance Parameters

Payload: Consider not only the weight of the welding torch, but also the cable package, mounting flange, and all end-of-arm tooling. A safety margin of approximately 10% is recommended. If the payload exceeds the rated capacity, it should be reduced accordingly.

Reach: Ensure the robot arm can reach every welding position. A seventh axis can be added to expand the working range.

Repeatability: This is the key indicator for maintaining consistent welding quality. High-precision applications typically require repeatability of ±0.1 mm or better.

Speed and Acceleration: These directly affect production cycle time and should match the production line rhythm.

5.3 Technical and Functional Configuration

Control System: Open control systems supporting protocols such as ROS and Modbus simplify secondary development and system integration. Intelligent functions such as path planning and force-position hybrid control improve production flexibility.

Sensor System: Determine whether a vision or laser seam tracking system is required to compensate for workpiece deviation. This is especially important for non-standard parts and high-precision welding applications.

Collaboration and Safety: If human-robot collaboration is required, the robot should comply with safety standards such as ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066, and be equipped with force sensing and collision detection functions.

5.4 Environmental Compatibility and System Integration

IP Protection Rating: Welding workshops contain dust, fumes, and spatter. An IP54 rating is generally recommended, while harsh environments may require IP67 protection.

Mounting Method: Floor-mounted, wall-mounted, or ceiling-mounted installation will affect the robot's working envelope and payload capacity.

Integration and Compatibility: Verify that the robot can communicate and integrate smoothly with existing welding power sources, PLCs, MES systems, and other automation equipment.

5.5 Cost and Return on Investment (ROI)

Total Cost: Evaluate not only the initial purchase cost of the robot, but also installation, programming, maintenance, energy consumption, and potential production downtime throughout the equipment lifecycle. In practice, the robot's reach has a greater impact on price than its payload.

Return on Investment: Estimate the value created through improved productivity, higher product yield, reduced labor costs, and overall operational efficiency after replacing manual welding, then calculate the expected payback period.

5.6 Supplier and After-Sales Service

Technical Capability and Industry Experience: Choose a supplier with extensive experience in similar automation projects and proven industry references.

Technical Support and After-Sales Service: Consider response time, spare parts availability, and training quality. Selecting a reliable long-term technology partner is more important than simply choosing a machine supplier.
